We arrived two hours early in Dover and were offered to take an earlier boat for £60 extra. Quite a rip-off considering the boats were half full? Maybe the fact it was December 30th had something to do whit it? When we got on the boat the tables in the seating areas were filthy, I've never seen anything like this when travelling with Norfolkline (DFDS). I will avoid P&O in future. 9.8
We booked for car with 4 passengers but two were unable to come at last minute. My e-mail to advise this and ask if any charge for change was replied to very quickly, confirming no charge and no problem. We had a good jouney to Dover and arrived at 2.15pm, earlier than expected for 4.45pm ferry. We were booked in quickly and allowed to board 2.45pm ferry, which was very helpful and much appreciated. Helpfulness and flexibility of staff was excellent and P & O and aferry are to be congratulated. We will be more than happy to use them again. 8.8
Before booking P&O I have read a number of reviews, and the negative things people complained about most were totally missing from my experience. I have to say, it was my smoothiest day trip yet. As a foot passenger, I have hardly anything to pont out, except I liked the 'Pride of Kent' ship better than the 'Pride of Calais' (which I took on the way back to Dover). Pride of Kent offers a superb full panorama from the top deck, whereas the Pride of Calaias only offered access to the side decks, that run along the sides of the ferry. And those side passages were crammed with ugly looking plastic chairs, and smelled of fresh paint in some places. So you couldn't really enjoy the breeze. Also, upon reaching Dover on the way back, the foot passengers (inc myself) couldn't alight for some 15 minutes due to a temporary loss of power ashore. But that was rectified, again- in no more than 10 min. Overall, I had a great trip and loved the hassle-ness-less of it from moment one, when I checked in at Dover ferry port. Check in was fast at both ports, and I didn't wait too long before boarding. Service was great on board both ways. Prices in coffee shops were reasonable, maybe only 10-20 p more than ashore. Toilets were clean and didn't smell. Border control both ways (the French folk) were not at all rude but very friendly, in fact. And i didn't experience any delays on route, except that minor wait at Dover, which was not the P&O fault, but rather an emergency. I would recommend P&O ferries to car-less people like me, as the cheapest way of travelling to France. Especially, if you do it for the first time and want to see the famous white cliffs. 8.0
Over all we were happy with the service, however on the way back from France to England, we missed the ferry simply due to the lack of organization. We arrived about 50 minutes before our ferry was due to depart. There were no separate queues for the people trying to get on the next ferry so we were in the queue with those who had bookings for the next two scheduled ferries. By the time we got to check in the ferry was gone. As the next one was booked we ended up waiting 2 hours with two young, hungry kids. Got home at 10 o'clock instead of 7. We were not impressed especially that we didn't stop driving all day just to make sure we get to the ferry on time. And we did, but still had to miss the ferry. 5.0
Saturday queues were horrific, being 500m up the dual carriageway from passport control. Slow passport checks, eventual quick check by P&O meant that we missed the 4pm ferry and were delayed to the 5.20pm one. The check in system in Calais can't cope when it gets at all busy. |
