Ancona Port History

Ancona became one of the major ports of the Adriatic between the thirteenth and fourteenth century, second only to Venice. However this did not last long, as Ancona, like other Italian towns, became the scene of many battles connected to the wars of independence, and was also the target of foreign occupations, including the massive air bombing campaigns during World War II, which destroyed whole areas of Ancona, and badly damaged the port.

After the war, many efforts were made to start working on the recovery of the piers and docks. Shipyards were rebuilt, and trade networks were established quickly, due to the central position of the Ancona ferry port in the Adriatic Sea. The port is nowadays one of the most vital and active in the Mediterranean and plays a leading role in passenger and trade services. The European Union ranked the port of Ancona, as a port of great importance internationally, and now more than 1.5 million passengers travel from Ancona to ports in Croatia, Albania, Montenegro, Greece and Turkey. In the ferries sector, the port of Ancona holds the record of international transits among Italian ports.
