Dun Laoghaire Ferry Port Overview

Dun Laoghaire Ferry Port is over 190 years old and is one of the main entry points into Ireland from United Kingdom. Dun Laoghaire ferry terminal was given a major revamp after the decision made by Stena Line to start a new High Speed Service from the port of Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead. This newly built terminal provides airport style accommodation and facilities for passengers.

Dun Laoghaire is a small but vibrant seaside town on the Irish coast and is situated only 7 miles to the south of Dublin city centre in some of the picturesque surroundings. Dun Laoghaire is reckoned to be the oldest town in Ireland.

It was named in the fifth century after its founder, King Laoghaire, the High King of Ireland. He used the area as a sea-fort (referred to as Dun in Irish) during his raids on France and Britain.

Dun Laoghaire harbour is notable for its two granite piers, home to some of the prestigious yacht clubs. The western pier is used extensively by windsurfers as a launch point throughout the year.

Dun Laoghaire harbour itself is a major attraction with a lighthouse at the eastern pier. Other attractions in the town include the National Maritime Museum of Ireland, James Joyce tower in nearby Sandycove, Dalkey castle and various other Victorian style mansions and art galleries.

Nearby George Street is the main shopping street in Dun Laoghaire along with two other major shopping centers just off the main street. There are many festivals and fun fairs almost every week in the summer months from June until September in Dun Laoghaire making it a perfect location for short breaks.
