Discover the Shetland Islands
A group of islands off the northern Scottish coast, the Shetland Islands are full of life, originality and not at all like a `mini Scotland'. There are many things to do around the islands, both in the remote islands (including Unst and Fetlar) and on Mainland (the biggest island in the Shetland Islands) where you can explore the main town of Lerwick and the historic Shetland capital of Scalloway.
See what it feels like to be a real Shetland islander by going to the Shetland Folk Festival, arguably the biggest festival on the islands with concerts and performers held all over the archipelago that runs late into the night all during May.
Travel to the Shetland Islands
There are ferries that travel to the islands all year round from five Scottish ports; St. Margaret's Hope, Scrabster, Stromness, Gills Bay and Aberdeen as well as ferries that go to and from Iceland, Norway and Denmark.
Things to See
Of course, you cannot go the Shetland Islands without seeing their most famous residents - the Shetland ponies. These cute yet feisty animals are probably the first thing people think of when someone says `Shetland Islands'. They're unique in the fact that, even when fully grown, these horses only come up to your waist!
Sea kayaking is one of the best ways to see the dramatic coastlines and beautiful sceneries of these incredible islands and also a fun way to keep fit. However, it is seasonal and you will only be able to kayak if the wind is less than Force 6. When you do go out onto the sea, it is a fascinating experience where you can see the best of Shetland wildlife, especially puffins and even seals, which are quite common around the islands and said to be very friendly.
Noss is another must-see that is easy to get to by boat. The cliffs on this island are famous for the birds that nest on the sheer cliffs.
