I booked this trip initially as a solo package. I called back two days later to add my family members to the trip and change the date of booking. They did not honor my request or provide me with a refund.

I was booked via the Anek web site for a return trip from Piraeus to Chania a trip I have done many times both by myself and with my family and a vehicle. Because I was travelling alone to visit my house in Crete I went for the less expensive option of airline seat/deck. Unfortunately my aircraft was diverted and I missed my booked sailing and was flown directly to Chania the next day. On visiting the Anek offices in Souda to get my return tickets I was offered cabin accommodation for the "balance" of my total booked ticket cost against the single journey cabin cost.
I thought that this was above anything Anek may have reasonably done as it was not their fault I had not used the outward portion of my booking.
The staff in the office were helpful and the customer service good. I have used Anek on both the internal and International [Italy Ancona/Venice] sailings and have always found them to be a good service and a high standard. On the Crete sailing the ferry is "sometimes" a little old/tired but the service is always good and the introduction of new ships such as the Elios makes the service all the better. The Elios has the same very high standard as the international ships.
Overall I have always recommended Anek and this last experience confirms my opinion of them.

We've done this route before and then we were travelling with our teenage children and had a cabin both ways. Cant fault that trip! This time it was just the 2 of us and we decided to only use the cabin coming back. And opted for the airline seats on the way to Patra. We will NEVER do that again! The pullman room absolutely stank of staleness and sweat, we assume from all the hundreds who've travelled before. Needs a very very thorough clean and air supply would be an option. Seats recline about an inch and a half regardless of what you read elsewhere.
We were very disappointed with the ferry this time. Had the same one from Patra too. Same unsmiling unfriendly staff. The only smile we got the whole two ways, was from a young lady working in various parts of the ship. And judging by her accent, she sounded Polish! The ship was in desperate need of some tlc. The best part of travelling with Anek this time was the views! Last time was a far better experience all round and thats even with terrible weather coming back which resulted in half the passengers vomiting profusely due to the turbulance!! So, come on Anek, we know you can do much better!
Also, dont expect any help at check in in Venice! We sat around for over an hr after confirming our check in before us and other passengers worked out for ourselves that we had to make our own way to the ferry. No signs or staff to say what we were to do!
Booking our tickets with A Ferry though, is easy and precise.

We travelled on the overnight ANEK ferry from Piraeus to Chania in early April. The boat and cabin (2 person outer cabin) were very nice - clean and comfortable and (to our surpise) quiet. The staff were helpful with showing us to our room and delivering bottled water etc. We were also impressed by the cafeteria and restaurant facilities as well as the various bars and sitting areas.
However, there are some simple things that ANEK and aferry.co.uk could do to improve things considerably for travellers, especially those new to using this service:
1) Explain on the booking reference (that you print out when you book a ticket online) what you need to do to find the correct ferry at Piraeus and the fact you need to exchange your booking reference print-out for an actual ticket at a separate ANEK office outside the boat itself. We had to ask multiple random people how to find our particular ferry at Piraeus from the metro, and discovered it involved a walk and a shuttle bus. We then found we needed to wait a considerable time in a line-up outside the boat to get actual tickets - luckily we had enough time for this, but we might not have. A few notes about this ahead of time from aferry.co.uk and/or ANEK would have been much appreciated.
2) In our cabin we were unable to hear any of the announcements being made on the ferry. I don't know if this is normal or if there was a technical problem in our particular cabin, but it seemed a little strange and potentially dangerous not to have any information given to us on board. Our particular ferry was an hour late leaving and we had no idea why this was or whether the time would be made up en route (it wasn't, and the person meeting us had to wait an extra hour).
3) Exiting the ferry as foot (non-car) passengers was chaotic and uncomfortable. Foot passengers line up throughout the corridors of the boat and move painfully slowly through the overheated and tiny spaces over about 30 minutes to exit the boat one by one. The reason for the jam is that the exit involves an escalator and stairs that passengers need to negotiate one by one with their heavy luggage. Needless to say it's slow and tedious. Not much fun when it's very early in the morning and most people haven't slept much. Surely ferry staff could advise passengers to wait in their rooms or seats or the cafeteria and exit at their leisure rather than everyone rushing to leave at once?
If the above items could be addressed, I'd have no hesitation in recommending the ferry service. I would also suggest a day time ferry service to Chania would be appreciated by passengers rather than just the overnight service (this doesn't seem to be offered off season anyway?).

Our Expensive Luxury cabin was well appointed but STUNK of smoke - there was a cigarette burn on one of the bedside tables - so much for non-smoking accomodation.
Although leaving Patras pretty much on time the unpublicised (until we were on board) go slow meant we were over 4 hours late into Ancona and had to drive for 3 hours in the dark arriving at our hotel late evening rather than late afternoon.

Apart for those 2 things - it was great - more of a disappointed winge than a complaint.
