Baltiysk is a Russian ferry port located on the straits of Baltiysk between Vistula Bay and Gdansk Bay in the region of Kaliningrad. Baltiysk is the only port which is ice free all year round along the Baltic coast of Russia. Currently, DFDS LISCO offers ferries from Baltiysk to Sassnitz in Germany upto twice a week.
Baltiysk is the Westernmost Russian port town in the territory of Kaliningrad. Baltiysk was formerly a Prussian village, later occupied by Swedes and then conquered by the Germans and named Pillau in 1946. Baltiysk is now an important naval base of the Russian Navy. Owing to its history of invasions and occupations, Baltiysk can be set apart from the rest of Baltic towns and cities. When Russians conquered Pillau in 1946, they changed its name to Baltiysk and expelled all the German inhabitants as part of the infamous "Russification" campaign. The town was completely closed to outsiders and even today entry remains forbidden for those who not have a pre approved permit.
Of the few remaining landmarks in Baltiysk, the notable ones are the pentagonal shaped Pillau citadel, the 13th century Lochstadt castle, St. George's cathedral, Baltic fleet museum, the lighthouse and the stone church built by the Germans in the 17th century.
Please Note: All passengers travelling to Baltiysk should fulfil any visa requirements to enter Baltiysk (a Russian enclave) and failure to do so will result in being refused entry into Baltiysk and the passenger would have to pay for the return journey themselves.
