About Bergen

The city of Bergen was founded in 1070 by King Olaf III and was originally called Bjorgvin; now Bergen is home to approximately 225000 inhabitants. Bergen is the second largest city of Norway and was honoured with the title of European Capital of Culture in 2000. Bergen boasts many popular attractions, including Floybanen (a Funicular railway), the Edvard Grieg museum, the Hanseatic Museum, the Fish Market and the Bergen Aquarium, which has one of the finest and most extensive collections of marine fauna in Europe.

Floybanen, the Funicular railway, will take you from the city center (150 meters from the Fish Market) to the top of the Mount Floyen at 320 meters above sea level. There you can enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding islands and walk along numerous paths around the mountain and to the lakes. The Troldhaugen, the Edvard Grieg museum, was the home of Nina and Edvard Grieg. This attractive Swiss-style house was built in 1884-85, with a spectacular view of the Lake Nordaas.
