Berneray is a small island in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Berneray is the only populated island in the sound of Harris apart from Boreray with just one person living on the island. Berneray has an area of about 10 square kilometres in total. Berneray is still one of the many calm and unspoilt islands due to lack of industrialisation and settlement.
Berneray's crescent shaped sandy beach is perhaps one of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland. "Machair" area of Berneray is a feature of the island with a colourful array of flowers and wild plants on display.
Berneray's latitude is very much similar to the Scandinavian latitude where summer months have exceptionally long days and tend to be warmer, warm air flows through Berneray due to its location and temperature rarely goes below freezing. The other factor for visiting Berneray is the dazzling display of the "Northern Lights"; lack of light pollution on this remote island makes it ideal to view this spectacular event as well as other astronomical features. |
