The seven Aeolian Islands are also known as the Lipari Islands. This volcanic archipelego is located just of the northern coast of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Famed for perfect weather and a series of active volcanoes with numerous craters, the islands have a strong tourism industry with numbers exceeding 200,000 each year. They are easily reached by ferry or hydrofoil from ports throughout the central Mediterranean.
Vulcano is the southernmost island and has some hot springs; it is best visited as a daytrip from Lipari - the largest main island with most inhabitants and the best tourist infrastructure.
But for real adventure you should head out to Stromboli. The volcano on Stromboli is still very active and a hike to the top of the crater and a night spent there is an experience not to be missed. Salina is lush and hilly, great for a relaxing walk. Panarea is a smaller upmarket island with great views across to Stromboli. Filcudi and Alicudi lie to the West and are much less visited.
