Discover the Ionian Islands. The Ionian Islands are a group of islands in Greece seperated from the Aegean Islands by the Greek mainland. They are traditionally called the Seven Islands (in Modern Greek Eptanisa, ÅdôÜíçóá), but the group includes many smaller islands as well as the seven principal ones. The seven are, from north to south:
-Kerkyra (EYñêoñá) usually known as Corfu in English
-Paxi (Dáîïß) also known as Paxos in English
-Lefkada (EåoêÜäá) also known as Lefkas in English
-Ithaki (ÉèÜêç) usually known as Ithaca in English
-Kefallonia (EåöáëëïíéÜ) often known as -Kefalonia/Cephalonia/Kefallinia in English
-Zakynthos (ÆÜêoíèïò) sometimes known as Zante in English
-Kythira (Eyèçñá) sometimes known as Cerigo in English
The islands in the Ionian Sea have a character all their own. They don't seem quite Greek, and indeed, you might say that they're not because they show a mixture of different influences. The Ionian Islands have a total area of about 1095 sq. miles and a population of around 261.000 of which most people live on Corfu, around 114.000 (including Paxi).
Things heat up on the Ionian Islands from June through to October, with temperatures reaching as high as 40°C (104°F) in the middle as summer. December and January yield high rainfalls and low temperatures; the periods of Easter through to the middle of June and September through to October, when the more extreme temperatures level off, are the most comfortable on the Islands. |
