The Sporades islands group lies off the eastern shore of mainland Greece and consists of 11 islands of which only 4 are inhabited: Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos and Skyros. These islands are characterized by dense vegetation and mountainous terrain and are world known as some of the bluest and cleanest seas one will ever come across and experience. Each of these has its own beauty and charm and has something unique to offer the visitor.
Sporades means "scattered," and for a long time the term didn't even apply to the islands in the northwestern Aegean, but was used for the Dodecanese.
Slightly further from the mainland, Alonnisos has its own little archipelago of smaller islands; these mark the area of the first ocean reserve in Greece, where monk seals, in particular, can breed in a natural habitat unspoiled by the hand of man. Although linked to these islands by geographical proximity, Evia and Skiros actually belong to another administrative district. Evia is in any case a world unto itself, the second largest island is so close to the mainland that it feels like mainland, where Greek tourists cluster in a few resorts but much of the land is still wild and rural, the province of farmers and hikers out to explore old ruins.
The Northern Sporades are considerably greener than the other Greek Islands; their broad pine forests, rocky coasts and wonderful beaches are simply waiting to be explored by visitors.
