Kalamata Ferry Port Overview
Kalamata, capital of Messinia in Southern Greece, is built on the foot of the Taygetos and near Messinia Bay. The name Kalamata probably has been derived from the Greek words kala ommata which means beautiful eyes.
A small Byzantine church on the north side of the city is devoted to the virgin of Kalomata. Kalamata has a historical center with beautiful neoclassical houses. A 13th century castle built by Geoffrey Villehardouin dominates the town.
Kalamata has an interesting archaeological museum, housed at the Benaki Mansion, and a folklore museum with relics of the War of Independence of 1821 and a fine arts museum. Kalamata also has theatres and theatrical groups that perform during the summer period in the amphitheatre of the castle.
The waterfront is lines with restaurants where you can taste the delicious local cuisine. Along the Messenian Gulf where Kalamata is located you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece.
