Lesbos (Lesvos) is an Island of harmony and beauty surrounded by the crystal clear Aegean sea. Lesvos is the third largest of the Greek Islands behind Crete and Evia, with a total size of 1630km2 and is made up of lush green pine filled mountains and valleys and olive and oak trees which cover a large part of the Island. Lesvos is also believed to make the best Ouzo in Greece.
Lesvos is located off the east coast of Turkey 348 kilometres from the mainland port of Piraeus.
Its climate is mild and sweet and is one of the most sun drenched parts of the Aegean. Lesvos is one of the most scenic of all the Greek Islands, with it's scattered hot springs, with their effective therapeutic qualities, the unique petrified forest of giant sequoias covered by lava 15-20 million years ago, then petrified and afterwards resurfaced as a result of seismic activity.
Keen hikers are also attracted to the island which has many wonderful walking trails particularly in the south where marked paths wend their way through the olive groves, pine and juniper forests and lush valleys awash with wildflowers and pistachio orchards. You may even be offered free accommodation from the local villagers if you offer to help clear and mark the ancient paths.
One of the most popular tourist spots on the island is the picture-postcard town of Mithymna (also known as Molyvos) on the north coast. The town is a delightful concoction of cobbled lanes, street fountains and Ottoman-style mansions with wooden balconies overflowing with flowers - all crowned by an imposing 14th century Genoese castle.
There are many lovely hill villages to visit, some fascinating museums and monasteries, a good choice of sand and pebble beaches and several hot springs which have attracted visitors seeking cures for various ailments since ancient times.
Virtually unaffected by the mass tourism that has turned other islands into amusement parks, Lesvos is the perfect place to visit for people who want to experience the real Greece. For the Greek Island traveler who is worried about not having enough to do, Lesvos is the perfect destination.
