It is part of the Greek prefecture of Lesbos (Lesvos) and consists of a considerable area of about 476 km² (150 sq.mi) with a population of 18,000, and is still largely unknown to tourists, therefore retaining a traditional and authentic charm. It is a magical place with superb beaches, numerous archaeological sites and a wonderful, unspoiled landscape. The traditional atmosphere of the island makes it even more appealing. You can even visit the resident Flamingos which are living in the lakes on the northern part. Most of the Island is mountainous, with very fertile valleys producing Mulberries and numerous Fruit trees.
The main town of Lemnos is Myrina, which lies on the western coast, and Moudros is the second largest town on the eastern shore of a large bay in the middle of the Island. Myrina (Kastro) consists of an excellent harbour, and is the point of all the main trade.
The name of the island came from the homonymous goddess worshipped there. According to mythology the oldest inhabitants of Lemnos were the Sinties, who greet Hephaestus, the god of fire and iron, when his father Zeus cast him out of the gods' residence on Mount Olympus. Since then Lemnos has the name of Hephaestus.
Lemnos was liberated from the Turks in 1912 and reunited with the Greek state.
The local products -wine, honey, cheese, pasta and sweets- have retained their traditional flavors for the tourist to enjoy, while the archaeological sites - Poliochni, Kaveria and Haephestos - and the natural beauties - the lake Chortarolimni with its flock of migrant birds, the fish ponds of Gomati, Papa and Keros and the sandy beaches with the azure, crystalline waters, cannot but invite those seeking relaxed and pleasant holidays far from touristic crowded places. |
