About Melilla

Melilla, on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, was originally a Phoenician settlement and has throughout history seen Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Vandal and Carthaginian rule. Melilla was conquered by Spain in 1492 and has been under Spanish administration ever since; this is reflected in the city's typically Andalusian character. The port of Melilla has become an important port for trade and transportation between North Africa and Spain.

The fortified Melilla old town, Melilla la Vieja, is surrounded by defensive walls and has changed little since the 16th Century. Some other interesting sights to see in Melilla include the Plaza de Espaņa square, which is surrounded by important local buildings, and the Zoruah Synagogue. Melilla also has a variety of museums to visit, including the Museum of Archaeology and History and the Military History Museum. Melilla is approximately 14 kilometres north of Nador; Nador is accessible from Melilla by train.
