AFerry.co.uk's Guide to Montenegro
Discover one of the newest countries in Europe
The idea of Montenegro has existed for over 1000 years. However, the small state of Montenegro has often been the pawn of bigger powers in the region. Whilst this has at times resulted in the loss of a lot of blood, it has also left behind a cultural richness that simply begs to be experienced.
Buses are the easiest and cheapest way to get around Montenegro, though you should take lots of water with you, as buses in Montenegro are not generally air conditioned. Alternatively, you might consider taking the train if you want to travel from the north to the South of the country.
Driving in Montenegro is also a possibility, though lack of investment during the Communist era means that many roads are in poor condition. It is unusual for it to be legal to drive more than 50mph; it is even more unusual for it to be safe to drive more than 50mph. Not that this stops the locals, who it seems compete in unannounced competitions to see who can survive the longest whilst still driving like a maniac.

The Monastery of Ostrog is well worth a visit. This sixteenth century building is set into a cliff face and has long been a seat of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is one of the most famous monasteries in the region.
Skadar Lake is the biggest freshwater lake in the Balkans. You can get here by public transport and, once you've arrived, there are unrivalled opportunities for birdwatching. There are also many picturesque villages and churches to be explored. When you combine this with the ability to get a boat trip on the lake, you could happily spend a holiday in this area of Montenegro.
