£398k boost for ferry firm
Plans to improve facilities at Western Ferries' terminal in Gourock have been given a boost by a cash windfall from a government enterprise agency.
The ferry operator has been awarded £398,000 by Argyll and the Islands Enterprise (AIE).
The money will go towards a £2 million development of enhanced passenger facilities, an enlarged marshalling area with improved road layout and a dedicated bus lane on the Cowal side of the river at Hunter's Quay.
It will also assist the company's larger proposal to provide a second linkspan at Hunter's Quay and McInroys' Point in Gourock, by contributing to the Cowal installation.
AIE's chief executive Ken Abernethy said the grant had been made as the ferry route was seen as a vital link to the Highlands
.
He said: "Over the next few years demand for access is expected to grow as a result of the regenerating economy and an increase in visitors to the National Park."
Western Ferries managing director Gordon Ross said plans had been on hold for two months while they were waiting for a decision from AIE.
He said: "This is the first stage in a rolling programme to improve services to the local community and our customers.
"We are grateful for the support of AIE and look forward to improving our infrastructure in the phases we have planned in the future."
WESTERN Ferries operates four ferries on the McInroys' Point/Hunter's Quay route. Latest available figures show it carried 500,000 cars and a million passengers during 2004.
