ACCIONA Trasmediterránea opens Spain - UK route

ACCIONA Trasmediterránea, Spain's largest shipping company, opens a new route between Spain and the UK .

ACCIONA Trasmediterránea, the principal passenger and freight transport company in Spain and one of the biggest in Europe, will commence a new shipping route between Portsmouth and Bilbao on 16 May. ACCIONA Trasmediterránea currently has international routes with France and northern Africa (Algeria and Morocco). This new route reinforces its international strategy of opening new markets in northern Europe.

The Fortuny superferry, one of the company's most modern and comfortable ships, will be used in the route. This ship has capacity for 1,000 passengers, and the on-board services provide a cruise-like sailing so that passengers can start their Spanish holidays in Spain as soon as they board: bathing in the outdoor pool in summer and in the indoor pool in winter, and leisure areas, restaurants, stores, etc.

Passengers can also arrange connections from eastern and southern Spain to the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Algeria and Morocco.

Sailings

There will be two weekly sailings in the off-peak season (between 16 May and 29 June and between 22 September and 31 December): the ship will leave Portsmouth at 12.00h on Monday and Thursday and arrive at Santurce-Bilbao at 17.00h on Tuesday and Friday; and it will leave Santurce-Bilbao at 21.00h on Tuesday and Saturday and arrive at Portsmouth at 07.00h on Thursday and Monday.

In the peak season (between 30 June and 21 September), the same hours will be maintained and the frequency will increase, with sailings every three days in both directions.

4-day minicruises, with a day to visit northern Spain. A feature offered only by Acciona Trasmediterránea's new route is the possibility of going on a 4-day minicruise, with a 28-hour stay in Bilbao, so that passengers can visit northern Spain, go sightseeing or shopping, and spend that night on board or in a hotel.

The new route also offers the possibility of going on the traditional 4-day minicruise, with an evening visit to Bilbao.

The Fortuny superferry
The Fortuny superferry has 10 decks and is one of the company's most modern ships. Completed in June 2001 at the Navantia shipyard in Puerto Real (Cádiz), the Fortuny previously sailed between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands, providing a broad range of quality services and a faster trip (23 knots) than conventional ferries.

It also has a car-deck for 330 vehicles (cars, caravans, buses) and a large cargo capacity (1,800 linear metres) to ensure sufficient space for ro-ro traffic between Portsmouth and Bilbao.

The Fortuny superferry has state-of-the-art technology. It was recently fitted with advanced propellers that drastically reduce energy consumption and air pollution. This new propeller design was made possible since the company and other Spanish research companies are involved in high-tech projects aimed at having a modern efficient fleet, in line with the development and sustainability criteria which guide ACCIONA's activities.

AccommodationThe superferries have 32 Club Class single or double cabins, 171 Tourist Class quad cabins, and 6 cabins for people with disabilities; all cabins have a bathroom. There is also a large oceanview lounge with TV sets.

The Club Class cabins have satellite TV, a mini-bar, room service, a welcome present, exclusive access to the Club Lounge, and exclusive boarding and disembarking facilities.

The variety of on-board restaurants enables passengers to taste Spanish dishes, tapas and wines in the á-la-carte restaurant, the self-service restaurant, the refreshment stand in the swimming pool, and the beer hall. The ship also has several leisure areas: indoor swimming pool in winter, seawater swimming pool in summer, massage parlour, gym, sauna, Jacuzzi, shops, children's play areas, cinema, pub, disco, heliport, etc.

ACCIONA operates in around twenty countries on five continents.
ACCIONA Trasmediterránea is Spain's largest shipping company, with a fleet of 26 freight and passenger ships in operation. The company provides year-round sailings from Barcelona and the east coast to the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza) on fast ships and ferries, and from southern Spain to Algeria, Morocco, the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and the Canary Islands. It also provides cargo transport to France's Atlantic coast.

Acciona Trasmediterránea is part of ACCIONA, one of Spain's largest companies in the fields of transportation, renewable energy, water, urban and environmental services, construction, home building, hospital management and other activities.

ACCIONA has over 30,000 employees and operates in over twenty countries on five continents: Spain, the UK, Portugal, France, Poland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Slovenia, Andorra, China, Australia, the US, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Algeria, Morocco and Gabon.

The "Pioneers in development and sustainability" motto is at the core of the company's long-term vision and inspires numerous ACCIONA initiatives in Spain and other countries. Examples of ACCIONA's actions: construction of the world's largest cable-stayed bridge in Hong Kong and the Petronas Towers (the world's highest building at the time) in Kuala Lumpur; leading the field in off-shore wind energy at the Arklow Bank wind farm in Ireland; a short-sea shipping route between Spain (Vigo) and France (Saint Nazaire); eco-efficiency applied to homebuilding, and technological progress in water treatment, including the re-use of purified water and mathematical models for biological processes.

In 2005, ACCIONA reported 4.853 billion euro in revenues, 743 million euro in EBITDA and 324 million euro in net profit. ACCIONA is included in Spain's blue-chip IBEX-35 index (ticker: ANA.MC) and has a market capitalisation of over 8 billion euro.

Acciona Trasmediterránea is the only Spanish passenger shipping company that connects Spain with the UK: on 16 May, regular services commence on the Fortuny superferry between Portsmouth and Bilbao. This is one of the company's most modern and comfortable ships so passengers can begin their Spanish holiday as soon as they board this veritable minicruise ship.

One of the new features in Acciona Trasmediterránea's new route is the possibility of going on a 4-day minicruise, with a day in Bilbao to visit northern Spain, go sightseeing or shopping. There is also the option of a minicruise with an evening in port.

The Fortuny superferry has state-of-the-art technology. For example, its advanced propellers reduce energy consumption and air pollution.

ACCIONA Trasmediterránea is the principal passenger and freight transport company in Spain, and one of the biggest in Europe. It has 26 operational ships that connect Spain's main Mediterranean and Atlantic ports with the Balearic Islands and Canary Islands, plus international routes to northwestern France, Algeria and Morocco.
