Brittany Ferries and the partners of Senacal (Société d'Equipement NAval du CALvados) plan to launch a project for a new ferry between Portsmouth and Caen/Ouistreham.
The new ship will be temporarily known as "M/V Mont Saint Michel 2" and should be introduced in 2009 or 2010. The new ship will have a stronger freight capacity than the MSM and will replace the Normandie.
Brittany Ferries had to launch the project at the end of 2004 but the
P&O Ferries difficulties forced the company to change its minds.
The information was given last Wednesday when
Brittany Ferries and officials (Brigitte Le Brethon, Anne d'Ornano, Cyrille Schott, Bernard Cazeneuve, .) celebrated the 20 years of BF in Caen/Ouistreham.
Francis Saint-Hellier, chairman of Senacal, pledged for a merger of Senacal and Senamanche (Société d'Equipement NAval de la MANCHE), the owner of Barfleur and Coutances 2. This could give more flexibility to
Brittany Ferries.
Alexis Gourvennec (who is 70), chairman of
Brittany Ferries, kept his humour and said that there were not competition between Caen and Cherbourg. But Cherbourg authorities are still discreetly looking for a new ferry operator in Cherbourg.
The problem remains the same :
Brittany Ferries is too expensive and has to face with new competitors. Mr Cazeneuve, Lord Mayor of Cherbourg who was on board the MSM, said the number of Brits in Normandy was decreasing each year.
