Acciona lines up Trasmediterranea ferries
Spanish construction and services group Acciona is set to sign an order with state-owned shipbuilder Navantia for construction of two ro-ro ferries for its subsidiary Trasmediterranea.
The ships will be built in Puerto Real, near the southern city of Cádiz, and will generate 1.8m man hours of work.
Navantia is primarily focused on defence work but is allowed under EU rules to handle a small amount of merchant work.
Trasmediterranea has launched a number of new services this year as it focuses on growing its shortsea route network.
Just this month, the company started operating a weekly freight-only service between Barcelona, Algeciras and the Canary Islands. The vessel Super-Fast Andalucia has enough capacity for 200 trailers and a service speed of 22 Knots.
Earlier this year Trasmediterranea launched services between Vigo, the Canary Islands and Casablanca, and between Las Palmas and Dakla, in Morocco.
The company also began a new service between Bilbao and the UK.
