Air fares 'to increase in volatile economy' | | | | 03 October 2008 | ferry crossings could prove increasingly popular to travellers over the coming year as air fares are set to rise substantially, according to research.
Advito, part of travel management company BCD Travel, announced an industry forecast suggesting that the cost of air travel could rise by as much as 13 per cent in 2009, TravelMole reports.
Fares could increase by between six and eight per cent, while additional fees such as surcharges and taxes could push ticket prices up even further.
The company said that airlines are set to take action in response to the "challenging environment" and difficult economic conditions.
Bob Brindley, vice president of Advito, said: "On average we predict 2009 rates to increase against 2008 by six per cent to eight per cent, but with clear differences by region and trip category.
"Unlike previous years, unbundling of services and the resulting fees are on the rise, and are projected to add another three per cent to five per cent to the total cost of air travel."
Travellers could be interested in taking more self-drive holidays around Europe and elsewhere as car rental rates are also expected to increase over the coming year. |
