Aito: Ferry trips part of the holiday experience | | | | 24 July 2008 | Travelling by ferry adds an extra element to a holiday as it is often seen as part of the overall experience, the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito) has claimed.
While flying from congested airports is generally seen as one of the major drawbacks of a foreign holiday, sailing to an overseas destination has the opposite appeal, according to Aito chairman Derek Moore.
"A ferry ride is often enjoyed by children as an adventure," Mr Moore said.
"Travellers, particularly families, see it as part of the holiday as opposed to just a method of transport getting them to their destination."
Mr Moore also said that ferry travel is convenient, cost-effective and a viable option for people who are concerned about the carbon footprint of their holidays.
British holidaymakers can embark on ferry trips from a number of ports in the UK, including Dover, Portsmouth, Liverpool and Newcastle. |
