Algeria's CNAN to sell ferries
Algerian state owned CNAN Group is to privatise its ferry business now gathered under the commercial banner CNAN Maghreb Line. Two companies are known to be interested: French airline Aigle Azur and Spanish ferry operator Acciona Trasmediterranea.
The latter, already runs services to Algeria, linking Almeria with Ghazaouet and Alicante with Oran. CNAN Maghreb Line was formed early in 2004 to provide passenger services between Algeria, southern France and Spain.
The company currently deploys the 1974-built, 1,000-passenger Millennium Express on routes between Algiers, Oran, Marseilles and Barcelona. The company has plans to operate more vessels on these routes.
CNAN Maghreb operates in direct competition with Algeria's leading ferry operator, ENTMV (Algérie Ferries), which runs five ferries between the same ports, including the recently-delivered 1,300-passenger capacity Tassili II and El Djazair II.
