Wine lovers around the world enjoy taking a trip to the Alsace region of France in the summer, but holidaymakers will not be disappointed if they book a Dover ferry and head to the destination in the autumn.
That is according to one reader of the Guardian, who wrote into the newspaper's travel tips section to explain that the Alsace wine route still offers plenty to see and do even after the vine leaves become bare.
duncandonuts suggested a walk through the small towns of Kaysersburg and Riquewihr, which combine both French and German culture, before heading over the Rhine to Freiburg to appreciate the Gothic architecture.
"In the Christmas markets we sampled hot bratwurst in crusty rolls, currywurst and dampfnudel – a suet pudding – with a cherry sauce and custard," the reader said.
Celebrity Christine Hamilton recently took a Portsmouth ferry to the Basque region, saying that there was plenty to do in the north of Spain, including the Guggenheim Museum, numerous coastline and high quality restaurants, the Daily Mail reported.
