Cycling enthusiasts planning cross channel ferry breaks this year have been encouraged to pay a visit to the Alsace region on France's eastern border with Germany and Switzerland.
According to the local tourist board, Alsace will be the "cycling centre of France this summer".
People interested in visiting the region should catch ferries to Calais from Dover with
Seafrance or P&O Ferries and head south.
On July 17th, the town of Colmar in Alsace will have the attention of the cycling world when it hosts a stage on the 2009 Tour de France.
Holidaymakers who would like to get out on the open road themselves can head to Strasbourg to follow more than 430km of cycling routes that take in the city's main attractions.
Another trail runs from Strasbourg to Thann, south of Colmar, passing through the foothills of the Vosges mountains and several quaint villages along the way.
LD Lines provides a travel option for people planning to visit Alsace with its Dover to Boulogne ferry service, while
Norfolkline offers ferries to Dunkerque from Dover.
