Bank holiday to see mass exodus of Brits | | | | 20 August 2008 | Some two million British people are set to escape the wettest August for years by setting off on holiday over the coming weekend, according to new figures.
The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) predicted that some 400,000 of the people getting away over the bank holiday weekend will travel by ferry or Eurotunnel.
Mediterranean resorts are set to be popular options, with the Balearic islands, mainland Spain and the Greek islands leading the way, followed by Turkey, Cyprus and Portugal.
City break hotspots will also see an influx of visitors, with Amsterdam, Dublin and Rome among the leading locations.
Abta president Justin Fleming said: "The August bank holiday is our traditional goodbye to the summer and is always very busy. This year is no exception with large numbers escaping to guaranteed sunshine, sandy beaches and warm seas."
The millions of people who will be using Gatwick, Stansted and Manchester airports this weekend could encounter difficulties if plans for a number of strikes are carried out. |
