Travellers taking ferries from Portsmouth to Bilbao in Spain may find that there is plenty to see and do in the port city without travelling much further inland.
According to a spokeswoman for Bilbao Tourismo, the Holy Week is a good time to visit, as there are numerous activities on offer for the public.
Semana Santa, as it is otherwise known, takes place between April 15th and 24th and features street parades and exhibitions of renowned paintings and sculptures.
It has been celebrated in Bilbao since the mid-16th century.
"One of the events that generates more expectation is the celebration of the Engineer's Regata, Domingo de Ramos, Domingo de Remos," the representative remarked.
"This is a totally amateur university rowing competition and is held along the estuary."
Besides the Holy Week celebrations, Bilbao has several major attractions for tourists, including the Guggenheim Museum and the Cathedral of St James.
Travellers can reach Bilbao directly from the south coast of England by ferry.
