Blue Planet Ibiza

The seas round Ibiza will soon be full of David Attenborough wannabees all thanks to local ferry company Balearia. The 150 baggy trousered philanthropists are all volunteers who have signed up for a study of marine mammals in the Mediterranean.

It's part of a controlled study by the University of Valencia to observe the local populations of dolphins and whales and see just what they're up to. Their position, numbers and behaviour will be carefully logged by the volunteers, who are all off on a course this weekend to teach them how to do it.

Balearia have very kindly offered the use of their ferries on the routes from Denia and Valencia on the mainland to the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Majorca.

The volunteers will start work on October 19th and will also be keeping an eye open for one of the Med's other endangered species, the turtle, which has been unintentionally overfished in the area.
