Ferry travellers planning breaks in Europe this autumn will have the opportunity to visit events that have been listed among the continent's finest food festivals by the Observer.
Holidaymakers can take
ferries to France and head south to visit Fete du Miel, a honey festival that will be held in Roquebrune-sur-Argens in Provence on October 2nd and 3rd.
La Haye-de-Routot near Rouen in Normandy will host an event on October 3rd dedicated to vegetables that were popular in the past but are less prevalent nowadays, while the Basque town of Espelette will pay tribute to the Piment chilli pepper on October 23rd and 24th.
Travellers can begin their French adventure by taking
ferries from Portsmouth to St Malo, Caen or Cherbourg with
Brittany Ferries, or sailing with
P&O or
SeaFrance on the
Dover to Calais ferry route.
Observer writer Nicola Iseard highlighted other events such as the Aritzon Chestnut and Walnut Festival, which will be held in the heart of Barbagia, Sardinia from October 29th to 31st.
Visitors can sample a range of roasted nuts, cakes and other local specialties while enjoying folk music and dancing.
Ferry passengers can sail to Porto Torres, Santa Teresa, Golfo Aranci or Olbia to get to Sardinia, with operators such as
Grimaldi Lines,
SNCM and
SNAV providing crossings from mainland France, Spain and Italy.
