Dover ferry port has released figures highlighting a "major boost" in holiday travel over the summer period.
More than one million cars have used the port over the summer, an increase of 14 per cent on last year, with a number of Dover ferry operators reporting a substantial rise in last-minute bookings.
The high demand for ferry travel from Dover was partly attributed to the convenience of regular sailings from the port, with ships departing every 30 minutes.
People returning to Dover from their European holidays recently have benefited from the new exit road, which was opened in August to reduce the time it takes for passengers to pass through the border control point and head towards the A20 or A2.
Port of Dover chief executive Bob Goldfield said: "It's great news that increasing numbers of families are heading to Dover as they seek good value getaways that do not need to be booked months in advance.
"Not only have we not seen any effect from so called 'staycationing', the number of visitors from Europe passing through Dover shows that Britain is definitely open for tourist business."
Both P&O Ferries and
Seafrance operate regular crossings on the
Dover to Calais ferry route, while
Norfolkline offers ferries to Dunkerque and
LD Lines provides a fast Dover to Boulogne ferry service.
