The new Hub Port facility was opened at Boulogne ferry terminal over the weekend, representing a new phase of development for the gateway.
Covering a total area of some 20 hectares, the Hub Port represents an investment of 45 million (£41 million), the Maritime Journal reports.
One of the most significant features of the development is a linkspan mechanism, which can be moved sideways to accommodate fast ferries as well as conventional ships.
LD Lines will make use of the new facility, with its fast ferries to Boulogne from Dover now docking at the Hub Port rather than the Gare Maritime.
Francis Leroy, president of the Boulogne Chamber of Commerce, said the opening of the hub represents "a new page" in the history of the ferry port.
He added: "The new Hub Port can now position itself strongly within the ferry transport market by re-establishing cross channel links, and we will now be able to develop cross channel freight and tourist traffic via Boulogne."
LD Lines also operates a Portsmouth to Le Havre ferry route and provides ferries to Cherbourg from the port of Rosslare in Ireland.
