Britain has "never been more affordable" for foreign tourists, according to marketing agency VisitBritain, suggesting that the recent influx of ferry travellers from Europe could continue over the coming months.
A spokeswoman for Seafrance recently told the Independent that the ferry operator had seen a rise in day-trip visitors to the UK that had extended beyond the Christmas period into January.
One of the main reasons for this, the company said, was the attractive exchange rate for people from eurozone countries.
According to VisitBritain, the tourism industry must promote itself to inform potential visitors of the value for money that is currently on offer to them.
"It's about making sure people are aware that Britain is an affordable destination. Britain has never been more affordable," a spokesman said.
"We are something like 20 per cent cheaper for Americans and ten or 12 per cent cheaper for eurozone visitors compared to the same time last year. There is a real opportunity for people to come here and find that their money will go that much further."
The affordability of Britain for European visitors helped Dover ferry port achieve its busiest December for four years in 2008, with Seafrance, P&O Ferries and Norfolkline carrying more than 1.1 million passengers to and from the terminal.
