Britons 'to use Jubilee holiday for Spanish trips'

Many Britons could be jumping on ferries from Plymouth to Santander or Portsmouth to Bilbao when the Diamond Jubilee bank holiday takes place.

A study by YouGov commissioned by Abta has found one-in-ten people will make use of the period to take a holiday, by taking an extra three days off to make a week or more away.

Commenting on this, Holiday Hypermarket's managing director Calum MacDonald said: "While Brits obviously have a lot of affection for the Queen and are proud of her 60-year reign, the bank holiday is a great time to take a mid-year break."

He said the data indicates Spain will be among the popular destinations during this period, while the 18 to 24 age range is most likely to take a break at home or overseas.

Earlier this month, Abta's research indicated that Spain would be the most popular Easter getaway destination, with an estimated 1.5 million Britons going there.
