Brits enjoying Isle of Wight holiday homes | | | | 18 August 2008 | Britons are increasingly looking to the Isle of Wight for holiday homes that are easily accessible by ferry in a property market that is thriving.
According to a report in the Times, property prices on the island have risen 2.1 per cent since July of last year partly as a result of its growing popularity among holiday investors.
"Buyers are getting younger and a number of big players are seeking out the island as a destination, even though they could probably live anywhere," property finder Cathy Tutton told the paper.
Set across the Solent from the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight has ferry ports at Fishbourne, Ryde and Yarmouth but it is also accessible by air.
Friends of the Earth have argued recently, however, that the government should invest to encourage people to use greener alternatives to flying, such as rail or ferry.
"Aviation is one of the fastest growing sources of climate changing emissions in the UK and no amount of carbon offsetting will change that," a spokesperson for the charity said.
The Times found that a two bedroom flat in 'up and coming' Ventnor could be found for around £110,000. |
