Brittany Ferries has encouraged winter sports enthusiasts to book a sea crossing to France this year and enjoy the freedom and convenience of a ski-drive holiday.
The company pointed out that airline baggage restrictions make it difficult and expensive for travellers to check in with skiing equipment, while recent strikes and volcanic eruptions have highlighted the potential for disruption in the aviation industry.
Furthermore, holidaymakers who take
ferries from Portsmouth to Caen, Cherbourg or St Malo rather than sailing from Dover can get some rest on an overnight cruise before beginning their journey in the morning.
Mike Bevens,
Brittany Ferries' group passenger commercial director, said: "Ski-drive makes sense. You simply pack your car - as much as you can fit inside - and go.
"Not only do you avoid all the hassle and expense of the airport, as well as car and equipment hire, you'll also enjoy much more freedom to drive around when you get to the mountains."
He went on to say that Portsmouth is "an ideal departure point", offering easy road connections from all parts of the UK and a range of sea travel options.
Travellers can also take
ferries from Portsmouth to Le Havre with
LD Lines, while
Condor Ferries sails to Cherbourg from the UK port.
