Brittany Ferries - Vital link to France cut for two months | | | | 26 November 2008 | | Source: Bournemouth Daily Echo | Brittany Ferries, which normally operates a 4 hour cross channel ferries link
twice daily and an overnight crossing, has pulled the service while the
20,133 tonne vessel Barfleur undergoes a major refit.
Passengers will be unable to use Brittany Ferries Poole to Cherbourg route from the 5th January until the 4th February 2009. Then the Barlfleur returns over half term until February 24, before another four-week break until the 24th March.
Steve Warner, general manager of Brittany Ferries' Poole operations, said the Barlfleur would spend its first four weeks in dry dock, which is an annual event, before the major refit in March.
He explained in past years the fleet had been shuffled to provide cover but other planned refit projects had made this impossible for 2009.
"This will be an extensive refit where the Barfleur will be taken to a shipyard," said Mr Warner.
"It is a million-euro upgrade of catering and leisure facilities for our passengers. There is nothing sinister here."
Brittany Ferries alternative service from Portsmouth to Cherbourg is also not
available throughout the winter. However, there is a daily service from Portsmouth to Caen, at the foot of the Cherbourg peninsular, throughout the suspension period. Other alternatives include LD Lines or Transmanche Ferries which offer daily sailings from Portsmouth or Newhaven. |
