Brittany Ferries is planning to expand its presence in the cross channel ferry market by bidding to take over Dover to Calais ferry operator Seafrance.
The company's declaration of its interest in Seafrance, which is owned by French national rail company SNCF, follows the withdrawal of a takeover offer from LD Lines.
If
Brittany Ferries is successful in its bid, it would create a group capable of offering strong competition to P&O Ferries on the Dover to Calais route, which could prove highly beneficial for passengers.
Jean-Marc Roue, president of
Brittany Ferries, said the company has a "real legitimacy" to put in an offer for Seafrance.
Managing director David Longden added: "After 37 years of experience on the longer routes to France and Spain, this is an exciting opportunity to introduce
Brittany Ferries' award-winning standards on Dover-Calais crossings and to provide an even greater choice for our passengers."
Brittany Ferries is already one of the dominant operators in the cross channel ferry market, with crossings from Portsmouth to St Malo, Poole to Cherbourg and Plymouth to Roscoff, as well as services from Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander in Spain.
