Travellers will be offered more services on the Portsmouth to Cherbourg ferry route courtesy of
Brittany Ferries next year.
The company announced that it would be suspending services to the French port from Poole and offering more sailings from Portsmouth to cut costs.
A new £75 million vessel will be used to operate three weekly crossings on the Portsmouth to Cherbourg ferry route, Portsmouth News reports.
Steve Tuckwell, a spokesman for
Brittany Ferries, told the news provider that the company has been losing money on its link from Poole since 2003.
He added: "The new ship will operate three days a week to Cherbourg.
"We hope any job losses would be voluntary and staff will move across to Portsmouth. We also anticipate new jobs in Portsmouth as a result."
Brittany Ferries also operates ferries to Caen and St Malo from Portsmouth and provides a link to Spain with its Santander ferry routes from Portsmouth and Plymouth.
