The French region of Brittany, which can be easily reached by taking ferries from Portsmouth to St Malo, is "the perfect bucket-and-spade holiday destination", according to a tourism industry spokesman.
Michael Dodds, director of the Brittany Tourist Board, said that the destination is particularly suited to people on camping holidays owing to its number of "very high-quality" campsites.
"The southern Brittany coast is particularly well-known, where you've got some super campsites right next to the coastline," he added.
Mr Dodds pointed out that Brittany is constantly boosting its appeal to tourists with developments such as the new spa opening next month, which will join the wide variety of health centres already based in the region.
Holidaymakers can also explore some 600km of navigable waterways in Brittany, including the historic canal running from Nantes to Brest.
Travellers can reach north-west France by sailing with
Brittany Ferries from Plymouth to Roscoff, from Portsmouth to St Malo or from Poole to Cherbourg.
Condor Ferries also provides ferry crossings from Weymouth and Poole to St Malo, while
Irish Ferries sails from Rosslare to Roscoff and Cherbourg.
