Ferry travellers looking for a city break this year could consider Brussels in Belgium, which was recently listed by the Sunday Times as one of the best destinations for couples looking for a romantic getaway.
Offering a run-down of the best alternatives to major cities such as Paris and Rome, the newspaper described Brussels as a "decadent" destination with "oodles of ooh-la-la" to rival the French capital.
One of the first places visitors may want to head to is the Grand Place in the centre of the city, which boasts gothic architecture and cobbled lanes that lead to the lower town.
Chocolate lovers will find plenty to interest them in the Belgian capital, including Place du Grand Sablon, also known as 'chocolate square', and the Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate.
Cheap ferries to Belgium are available with P&O Ferries from Hull to Zeebrugge and also with
TransEuropa Ferries, which sails from Ramsgate to Ostend.
Eurostar also offers direct rail services from London St Pancras to Brussels.
Another guide published recently by the Times reviewed Europe's best spa break destinations, with a seal of approval given to Spa Nuxe 32 in Paris and La Reserve in Geneva.
