Brussels urged to study Corsica tender
Brussels - The bitter battle between French ferry operators CMN and SNCM has gone to Brussels with CMN urging three European commissioners to take a closer look at the tender for south France-Corsica ferry routes to be awarded later this month.
CMN has suggested that the tender could include a number of "irregularities". A letter sent to transport commissioner Jacques Barrot, competition commisioner Neelie Kroes and interior market commisioner Charlie McCreevy has slammed the "distortion of competition" in the way the tender has been put together.
CMN is formally asking Brussels to urge the French authorities to suspend the tender process until European authorities decide whether or not a large injection of public funding into SNCM is distorting competition.
A source close to CMN alleged that the tender has been put together in a way that benefits SNCM. Commissioner Barrot responded that the probe into SNCM restructuring would be rigorous.
Rumours emerged last week that Corsican authorities has rejected the CMN bid, but this has been strongly denied by CMN management.
