Dover ferry services proved so popular on December 22nd that the port experienced what was thought to be its busiest ever winter day.
Some 77,988 passengers travelled through Dover on December 22nd along with 15,960 tourist cars, representing growth of 6.4 per cent and 14.1 per cent respectively on the same day in 2007.
The port also handled some 517 coaches and 4,841 freight vehicles, which were transported on more than 60 ferry departures, most of which were bound for France.
A number of factors contributed to the growth in traffic, including reduced capacity through the Channel Tunnel and the number of people travelling to Europe for Christmas breaks and festive market trips.
Port of Dover chief executive Bob Goldfield said: "We regret there were long delays on the approach roads to the port but the lack of available
Eurotunnel capacity meant the port having to handle a much larger volume of traffic.
"This was probably the busiest winter day the port has ever experienced for outbound traffic."
Dover's more than 60 daily ferry departures are operated by P&O Ferries, Seafrance and Norfolkline to Calais and Dunkerque.
