The Dunkerque Carnival will get underway on January 31st and come to an end on March 14th, meaning there will be plenty of entertainment on offer for people planning cross channel ferry trips.
Northern France hosts a number of festivals and public celebrations throughout the year and the Dunkerque Carnival is one of the best known and oldest of them all.
Music is one of the most important aspects of the carnival, with groups known as fisherbands performing songs up against one another before dispersing to entertain locals and visitors throughout the town.
The event also sees choirs singing to celebrate the French naval commander Jean Bart and huge crowds gathering to take part in a tradition whereby herring are thrown from the top of the belfry.
Dunkerque boasts a number of attractions that tourists can visit while they are not enjoying carnival events, such as the Musee Portuaire, which explores the history and culture of the area, and the Musee des Beaux Arts.
Norfolkline provides direct ferry services to Dunkerque from Dover, while both P&O Ferries and Seafrance sail from Dover to Calais, which is just a short drive away from Dunkerque.
