Catch some top-flight football in France

Sports fans planning ferry trips to northern France in the near future may want to head to one of the many local football sides that are part of Ligue 1, the top tier of French football.

There are a number of popular clubs based around the Brittany and Normandy regions in north-west France, including Rennes, Nantes, Le Mans and Caen.

One of the highlights of the forthcoming fixtures in Ligue 1 will see Rennes host Paris Saint-Germain at the Route de Lorient on November 29th.

After 12 games of the 2008-09 season, only two points separated these sides, suggesting that the forthcoming match should be a competitive affair.

Football fans planning ferry trips to France before the end of the year may also get the chance to see a local derby when Caen take on Rennes at the Michel d'Ornano stadium on December 6th.

On the same day, Nantes will face a tough test in their home game against reigning champions and league leaders Lyon at La Beaujoire.

Ferry crossings to northern France are provided by several operators, including P&O Ferries, LD Lines and Brittany Ferries, which sail to ports such as Le Havre, Caen and Roscoff.
