Caution advised for winter driving holidays |  | | | 02 December 2008 | British motorists have been reminded of the need to take extra care when driving during the winter months owing to the dangers posed by adverse weather conditions.
The Met Office has forecast that the whole of the British Isles will see a colder winter this year than in 2007-08, meaning people setting off on self-drive ski holidays and other road trips need to be fully prepared.
According to RIAS, a company that specialises in insurance for over-50s, one of the biggest dangers for drivers will be fog, which severely impairs visibility.
Freezing fog can also be hazardous as it creates an icy glaze on road surfaces and can cause vehicles to skid.
RIAS advised people driving in fog to always keep a safe distance from the car in front, use dipped headlights, keep to an even speed and, if necessary, wind down windows to listen for traffic at junctions if visibility is severely limited.
Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, said: "Drivers need to be aware that driving in winter, especially in foggy conditions, carries increased risks."
She added: "We urge drivers to take stock and always be prepared."
