Chamonix ski guide offered | | | | 17 October 2008 | People whose self-drive ski holidays to France are set to take them to Chamonix this winter have been offered a guide to the resort's top five runs.
According to Telegraph travel writer Gabriella Le Breton, the most famous ski run in Chamonix is the Vallee Blanche, which boasts 14 miles of off-piste skiing down the Mer de Glace glacier.
First-timers paying a visit to this location are advised to make use of a guide to lead them down the valley as there are dangerous crevasses.
The second run in the Telegraph guide is Brevent, which is located across the valley from Mont Blanc and will this year open a new gondola that will improve access from the centre of town.
Another option for people taking ski holidays in Chamonix is the Grands Montets area, which is accessible from the village of Argentiere and boasts off-piste descents including Pas de Chevre, Combe de la Pendant and the Italian Bowl.
Le Tour is a good location for intermediate and advanced skiers, according to the guide, with slopes of varying difficulties as well as some challenging off-piste terrain.
People whose ski holidays are blighted by bad weather may want to head to Les Houches, which offers a degree of shelter as most skiing is below the tree-line. |
