Holidaymakers planning to use
Eurotunnel services to reach the continent next year should see the tunnel return to full operations in February, it has been announced.
Eurotunnel chief executive Jacques Gounon confirmed that the tunnel will fully reopen on February 15th as he showed visitors the severe damage that the fire of September 11th caused.
It is thought that a lorry fire on a freight shuttle caused the blaze, which led to suspension of services in the tunnel and saw many people relying on cross-Channel ferries to reach the continent.
Mr Gounon said that customers should not be concerned about travelling through the Channel Tunnel when it reopens and pointed out that new safety measures are being introduced.
According to Kent Online, the
Eurotunnel chief executive said that safety remains the company's "key priority".
He added: "Once we resume traffic in February we will see customers coming back to the levels we had before."
The Channel Tunnel, which is the world's longest uninterrupted undersea link, carries Eurostar passenger trains and
Eurotunnel vehicle transport, as well as international freight trains.
