Many holidaymakers booking cross channel ferries this time of year head to the French Alps for a winter walking holiday.
According to Belle France, one of the area's most appealing regions is Savoie and the small village of St Nicholas la Chapelle, where a number of walks - complete with snowshoes and cross-country skis - operate from.
The village is located just 20 miles from Europe's highest peak, Mont Blanc, and offers an alternative winter holiday to the traditional skiing break.
Batons are also provided during walks, which typically last for around six hours a day. They pass through a number of different terrains, from open pastures to wooded slopes.
Elsewhere, the Auvergne region is popular with winter walkers, where mornings are spent perfecting snowshoe and cross-country skiing techniques before the guided walks begin.
Auvergne is easily accessible for Britons thanks to the
Dover to Calais ferry, after which travellers can drive to Paris before joining the A71 motorway and heading south.
