Color Line buys terminal preference
Norway's biggest passenger/ferry operator Color Line buys preference to the ferry terminal in Kristiansand in South Norway to the tune of NOK 3.0 million per year in addition to the ususal port fees.
The matter has come to light because a newly established competitor on the Denmark route, Master Ferries, has had difficulties in negotiating a commercially viable contract with the Port of Kristiansand.
Port director in Kristiansand, Stein Haartveit, admits the Color Line agreement has made matters difficult for Master Ferries, which plans to start fast ferry sailings from Kristiansand to Hanstholm in April.
Port of Kristiansand admits that both Color Line and DFDS has preference at the terminal for capacity reasons. The root of the problem is that Color Line and Master Ferries want the best departure times.
Color Line expects to get first choice according to the agreement, but Haartveit now says the agreement turns out to be unfortunate, since the Port of Kristiansand is a municipal port.
