Couples 'the biggest travelling group in the UK' | | | | 01 September 2008 | Of all the people taking ferry crossings and other trips to various destinations around the UK, couples represent the biggest travelling group of all, according to VisitBritain.
Elliot Frisby, a spokesman for the tourism organisation, revealed that British couples took 57.9 million overnight trips in 2007, making them by far the largest group of travellers in the UK.
The next largest section of the market is people travelling alone, who took 38 million overnight trips around the UK last year.
Mr Frisby said that one of the main appeals of the British tourism industry is its diversity, with attractions ranging from bustling cities to rural retreats.
"Our cities are benefiting from regeneration programmes, contemporary attractions, new hotels and architecture," he said.
"We benefit from centuries of history and heritage attractions as well as a unique culture with events, ceremonies and more quirky traditions, rooted in music, film and literature."
Brits planning trips on cheap ferries to reach destinations in the UK and Ireland can choose from popular routes such as the Liverpool-Dublin ferry crossing with P&O Ferries or services to the Isle of Wight with operators including Red Funnel and Wightlink. |
